The stages of producing a video, film or television program are the same in many ways. Read more below about the production process from start to finish.
Stage 1, Pre-Production
Information gathering from the client or organization or others on messages and goals.
Research on solutions to the client’s needs and treatment drafts. A treatment is a proposal often in an outline.
Gather client feedback to the treatment and draft a proposal for client approval. Budgeting and planning are included to be approved before stage 2.
Actors and talent contracts and the camera crew is budgeted into the production.
Stage 2, More Pre-Production
Script writing begins and storyboarding if ideas need to be better visualized. For feature films or TV series productions, a concept artist, character designer, begins storyboarding. And making concept art for evaluation. Set designers begin drafting artwork detailing plots, characters, themes and other elements. Costume designers also come into play by creating ideas for characters and apparel.
After client approval or revisions to scripts, ideas, budgeting begins, coordination of the camera crew, and planning. Often a producer is also a script writer and sometimes a storyboard artist.
Set designers, prop masters and others begin creating, or CG artists in the case of digital environments. If it’s a video production existing environments, actors or on-camera talent then are planned into roles.
Location scouting and other planning begins to find sets (scenes are sought from places and planned for action).
Everything on a video production, film or television production is planned as much as possible before production begins.
Stage 3, Production
After the production planning, the filming or recording of footage begins under a director(s) and or producers. Scenes from a script and storyboards are done from locations.
Reviews of scenes, takes, shots and footage for potential re-takes. This can be done on site while filming or recording.
Once the director(s) and producer(s) are satisfied with the footage the post-production, (editing), process begins.
Stage 4, Post-Production
The footage and media are edited together for a video production, film or TV program, advertisement or other message.
Graphics and animations are created and edited in with the video or film for effect, explanation or branding.
Any revisions or additions may include additional content to be filmed or recorded or more media added.
Any other revisions include the steps listed in this paragraph or other production phases above.
