Creating Characters, Sets, Concept Art, Storyboards1 (720) 299-2084 Nick Teti, I provide conceptual artist services including character and set design, often called a concept artist. I can also take these ideas to write a script and draw or illustrate storyboards. The process is used in motion picture creation and often in a TV series or television special. Sometimes in non-broadcast or for a television commercial among other programs. Concept art can create any idea or theme into images that can be collaborated on and revised or taken to other stages in a production. Character, costume or set designers are also used in theatre performances. Costume designers are also used in motion pictures, TV and in theatre performances. These services can be drawn, painted, or other artistic medium created with software. Sometimes a mixed approach using several or all of these techniques. Concept artists artwork can also design a character designer, set or costume designer that creates and combines the materials and assets into a physical creation. Or the art is used by the CG artists to create characters, sets, or the entire movie or TV feature. Becoming a Character Designer or Concept ArtistCharacter DesignHaving an artistic background and education is the most critical step, along with a great imagination. Having an education in anatomy of humans and animals is also a great asset. Learning anatomy at a skeletal and muscular level of a character is ideal. Art education and practice drawing, painting and making art by hand is an early step forward, including sculpting. Drawing other artists work for practice is also education. Drawing classes, including advanced drawing at an art school, college or university or trade school will get you the experience you need. Taking film and video production classes that focus on the shared skills of storyboarding, concept art, character and set design are beneficial. As well learning television, film and video production by a trade school or college or university will help you as well. Having knowledge in camera blocking, camera movement, lighting, script writing, and hands on production will be critical to success. Some of this can be learned by watching movies, reading comics or graphic novels and the like will help as well. Creating art, characters, sets and writing your ideas down will let you revisit your creativity later. Learning script writing will also help, as well creative writing practice can reserve your ideas. Even if you have outlines or ideas, write them down as they come to you. All of this makes you better at every skill. 3D modeling, animation and rendering are often required; especially in game development. Also a very desirable skill-set.
